Most days when Sylvia Barrientos turns on the faucet at her home in Stamford, the water is brown or very yellow.
“It smells like fish, too,” Barrientos said.
She is on a crusade to make sure the city of Stamford addresses the problem, but claims that her complaints have fallen on deaf ears. She has organized a meeting to be held tonight at a local restaurant where citizens can come and discuss the water problems.
“It is horrible,” Barrientos said. “I pay about $100 a month for water in my house and it is only good enough to flush the toilet with.”
Barrientos says she has gathered over 100 signatures of other residents who report brown, smelly water coming from the faucets.
City officials were unavailable for comment Monday.
The water problems were reported to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality on Aug. 28, and the TCEQ responded Sept. 2 to test the brown water.
“We have tested the water and oddly enough, there are no violations of the drinking water standard,” said Winona Henry, regional director of the TCEQ in Abilene.
Investigators speculate that changing the source water from Lake Stamford to College Lake at the first part of the summer could be the cause of the discoloration. Plus, investigators speculated the water is discolored due to old cast iron pipes that need to be replaced.
Henry, who acknowledged the Stamford water was discolored, said the water is tested monthly for quality assurance and there have been no boil water notices issued in recent months.
Barrientos, a resident for the past 30 years, first noticed the discolored water three years ago. She reported the problem, and city officials said the discoloration could be coming from the pipes in her home, which was built in 1903.
“I replaced them and it is still bad,” Barrientos said.

It is amazing to me that people are told this filth is "OK to drink". I understand that this passes "minimum standards", but seriously...would you drink brown water that smells like fish?
-what made it brown
-what makes it smell like fish?
-what else is in it?
These people need serious help...this is a perfect application for ultrafiltration
