I have an older water softener, which has a tall tank similar in size and shape to an oxygen or helium tank, accompanied by a plastic tank where the salt was added. It began leaking out of the tall tank, and the only way to stop the water from running constantly was to bypass the system. Is a leak out of the bottom repairable?

If not, I found a used (5 year-old) Water Fountain Home Filtration System for $425, which the seller says cost $3,500 new. Might it really have cost that five years ago, is that a good system, and is one that age for that price a good deal?

Leaks from the bottom of a softener tank are irreparable, but in most cases the leak is at the top and dribbles down to the bottom. If the leak is from the top, it could be a crack tank collar (irreparable) blown o-ring (cheap to fix), or damaged control valve body (repairable, but can be costly).

The Water Fountain system is an excellent combination softening, conditioning, and filtration system. This is one of the few systems on the market where the softened water doesn't feel as slick/slimy as a regular softener. They used to retail for $ 3,000 - $ 8,000 depending on the size of the system, complexity of the installation, and extended warranty purchased from the dealer.

$425 for a 5 year-old working system is a great deal. I suggest you have a factory-authorized service technician disinfect and tune it up for you once you have it installed and they can help you make sure that everything is working right.

Greg,

The used Water Fountain unit has a little blue screen with the time and "679GL" displayed on the top line, and what appears (from the photo sent by seller) to read "erformance & Eff" (no "P" visible). Can you tell me what those mean?

That is an Evertech Series 2 Controller, it is field upgradeable. The 2nd line message is a scrolling marquee that displays error messages or just scrolls the software version. What you're seeing scrolling there is "Performance and Efficiency Update 2xxx". Which indicates the software has been updated at some point from the factory original - that is a good thing. See if you can find out from the seller what version they have.

The 679GL indicates that the system can process 679 gallons of water before it needs to clean itself. The display will begin at a maximum level after each cleaning and them count down progressively as water is used until the system cleans itself.
