I hate my Northstar

PLEASE Help me, I have a Northstar water softener that my plumber put in my house for me. My water doesn't feel soft and I haven't used any salt for the last month. We have 8 people in the home;the system has been in the home since 2006 and the plumber has come out at least 3or4 times to try to keep it working. In the the last 2 years I think we've had no more than six months of continuos soft water.

Whats the best way to get this thing going properly ?

I want to try to fix it myself - My plumber obviously doesn't know what the h... he's doing with it.

Northstars are usually good for 5 - 8 years.

What is your water hardness ?

Have you checked for a salt bridge ?
