We moved to San Antonio Texas and need to get a good reliable water softener. Can anyone here recommend a good & economical system that will work on our water ?

I know the water in San Antonio is extremely hard, but the best place to start is with a complete water screening:-

1. Hardness
2. Iron
3. pH
4. TDS
5. Total Alkalinity

That data will allow you to be armed with the right information in sizing/selecting an appropriate system for your home.

Also be prepared to provide information about your family size, water main pipe size, and any information about special needs or applications that you might want.
